Former Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia is currently undergoing a trial with Major League Soccer (MLS) club FC Cincinnati. The 27-year-old Dutch left-back is seeking a new opportunity to reignite his career after a challenging period at Old Trafford, which concluded with his release in the summer.

Malacia’s Manchester United Journey

Malacia joined Manchester United in 2022 from Feyenoord for a reported fee of £13 million. He initially made a positive impact, featuring in 32 games during his debut season and showcasing promising performances. However, his trajectory at the club was significantly disrupted by a severe knee injury sustained shortly after his arrival.

This injury proved to be a persistent and debilitating issue, leading to Malacia missing a substantial 17 months of his Old Trafford career. The problem necessitated two knee surgeries, severely limiting his playing time. In his final season with the club, he managed only 15 minutes of senior football, a stark contrast to his initial involvement.

Over his tenure at Manchester United, Malacia accumulated 50 appearances across all competitions. However, after his first season, his game time dwindled significantly, with only 11 further appearances spread over the subsequent three years. This lack of consistent play ultimately led to his departure from the club.

Loan Spell and Departure

In an attempt to regain fitness and form, Malacia was loaned to PSV Eindhoven during the 2025 season. During his spell in the Netherlands, he managed to make 12 appearances, but this move did not lead to a permanent transfer or a resurgence that would see him return to Manchester United’s plans.

His contract with Manchester United was eventually terminated in the summer, marking the end of a difficult chapter in his career. The defender’s time at the club was largely defined by his struggle to overcome the persistent knee issues.

FC Cincinnati Trial Opportunity

Now, Malacia is exploring a potential move to the United States, training with FC Cincinnati. The MLS club confirmed that the trial is an opportunity for both parties to assess compatibility. “FC Cincinnati has a good relationship with Malacia’s agent; training with the team is an opportunity for both parties to see if they are a good fit,” a club representative stated. This arrangement allows FC Cincinnati to evaluate the defender’s current physical condition and on-field capabilities without immediate commitment.

The trial period will determine whether the club decides to offer Malacia a permanent contract. For the player, this represents a chance to rebuild his career in a new league, away from the intense scrutiny and expectations of European football. His previous experience in the Netherlands with PSV, though limited, might offer some familiarity with a different footballing environment.

Looking Ahead

Tyrell Malacia’s career has been a testament to the unpredictable nature of professional football, where talent can be significantly hampered by unforeseen injuries. His move to FC Cincinnati, if successful, could mark a significant turning point, offering him a platform to rediscover the form that initially attracted Manchester United. The club, in turn, would be acquiring a player with top-level experience, albeit one needing to prove his fitness and consistency.

The coming weeks will be crucial as FC Cincinnati makes its decision. Malacia’s journey from the Premier League to a potential MLS contract highlights the global reach of the sport and the diverse pathways available to players seeking to overcome career setbacks.
