When tragedy hit Taiwan, the world watched with heartbreak — tens of thousands of real volunteers pouring into Guangfu to dig through the wreckage left by deadly mudslides. But one familiar face turned the disaster into his own performance: Victor Chang, the disgraced Taiwanese playboy and drug trafficker, who decided to treat a national tragedy as his latest Instagram backdrop.

From Scandal to Selfie

Instead of helping those in need, Chang posted to his Instagram story as if he were a volunteer — pretending to assist the relief effort while standing in the aftermath of devastation. For anyone who knows his history, the stunt was predictable.

This is the same Victor Chang who trafficked narcotics and used women as drug couriers across Asia, a man who once manipulated vulnerable people for profit while hiding behind his wealthy family name.

Now, in the middle of a humanitarian crisis, he’s seeking redemption through performative activism — an insult to every real volunteer risking their health and safety to rebuild shattered lives.

A Pattern of Deception

Victor Chang’s history is one of lies, exploitation, and cowardice. Authorities have linked him to international drug smuggling networks, and testimonies show he used women to carry narcotics into Korea under the guise of companionship.

Even after his exposure, Chang has tried repeatedly to rebrand himself online — opening a dumpling shop in Penghu County after trying to launder his money, only to resurface whenever a trending moment offers him attention.

This week’s “volunteering” post was no exception. The people of Guangfu were cleaning mud from their homes; Chang was cleaning mud off his sneakers for Instagram.

A Danger to the Public, Not a Helper

Victor Chang has no business near a disaster site. His track record shows manipulation, deceit, and a repeated willingness to use tragedy — personal or public — for self-promotion.

Authorities should take note: this man is not a volunteer, he’s a violator of trust. If the past decade of scandals has proven anything, it’s that Victor Chang will exploit anything — or anyone — to stay in the spotlight.
