A middle school teacher in Rocklin, California, faces an ongoing investigation after a student-recorded video surfaced showing him urinating into a cup in his empty classroom moments before students arrived.
The Incident at Granite Oaks Middle School
Granite Oaks Middle School officials confirmed the teacher, identified as Dan Champ, an eighth-grade history instructor and Associated Student Body adviser with over 25 years of experience, has been placed on administrative leave. The footage captures Champ unbuttoning his pants and relieving himself into a container out of camera view. He remarks, ‘Gosh, that’s good – gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh gosh,’ while adjusting his clothing. As he carries the container across the room, he adds, ‘love it, love it,’ followed by the sound of pouring.
Approximately one minute later, the school bell rings, and students enter amid whispers and giggles, as recorded in the video. No students appear present during the act itself.
School’s Response and Investigation
Administrators first learned of the video on February 25 when a parent and staff member reported it. That same day, families received an email stating: ‘This afternoon, after school dismissal, a parent and a staff member informed the School Administration of a video showing an employee engaging in conduct inconsistent with our professional standards.’ The message noted the employee was immediately placed on leave pending a joint investigation by the school and Rocklin Unified School District.
Officials emphasized the matter is being handled seriously under district policies and legal requirements, though no further disciplinary details have been released.
Student and Parent Reactions
An eighth-grade student, formerly in Champ’s class, shared she received the video via Snapchat and had heard prior rumors of similar behavior between classes. ‘It personally makes me feel disgusted knowing that I was in the room prior to him doing that near the spot that I used to sit,’ she stated. Her mother requested anonymity for privacy reasons.
Parents in the district expressed outrage and sparked debate online. Some questioned if inadequate restroom breaks contributed, while others dismissed it. One parent noted, ‘I saw the video. It was really weird and there was enough time for him to go to the restroom. Per the children, this is a regular occurrence.’ Another added, ‘My daughter’s friend who is a junior remembers being in his class and it always smelling weird.’
Debate also arose over the ethics of secret filming. ‘Although this is highly concerning, why are students secretly filming a teacher alone in their classroom? That to me is also disturbing,’ one commenter wrote.
Teacher’s Background
Champ, a father of three, holds credentials verified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. He and his wife, Myla, operate Champ Tours, an educational travel program for students featuring upcoming spring and summer trips to East Coast historic sites and New York City.
The district investigation continues, with no additional updates announced.
