A 72-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in smuggling over seven kilograms of heroin into Canada. Maurice Nadeau, a military veteran, was convicted of drug possession and importation approximately one year ago.

Drug Smuggling Operation Uncovered

The sentencing took place on Tuesday, with Quebec court Judge Éric de Champlain emphasizing the significant harm caused by drug trafficking. Nadeau was apprehended in May 2022 at Montreal’s Trudeau airport. Customs officers discovered 7.2 kilograms of heroin concealed within a suitcase featuring a false bottom.

At the time of his arrest, Nadeau, then 68, claimed the suitcase had been given to him by an unfamiliar woman in Johannesburg. He stated he believed he was transporting gifts back to Canada. Court documents indicate he had a hotel reservation in Montreal and was instructed to hand over the suitcase to an unknown individual upon arrival.

The drugs were brought to light when Nadeau himself informed customs officers about the suitcase, asserting it did not belong to him and that he had not packed its contents.

Defense Claims Victim of Criminal Organization

Nadeau’s defense lawyer, Mike Junior Boudreau, argued in court that his client was deceived by a criminal organization. Following the sentencing, Boudreau expressed his reservations about the 12-year sentence, considering Nadeau’s age. “To see him go to prison, I’ll admit, it affects me. I feel very sorry for him,” Boudreau stated. He confirmed plans to appeal the decision and continue to advocate for Nadeau’s innocence.

Pattern of Suspicious International Trips

According to the judge’s findings, Nadeau received a WhatsApp message on March 4, 2022, from an individual identifying as an English banker. He was informed that he had won $2.3 million USD and was required to travel to South Africa to claim his prize.

Nadeau’s account suggests he was told he needed to bring back a gift from South Africa and sign documents to facilitate the transfer of funds to Canada. This was not the first instance where Nadeau believed he had secured a significant financial windfall through online means.

In the fall of 2021, he was informed he had won an all-expenses-paid trip to 15 countries over 33 days through a Facebook contest. He was also promised $2.3 million USD upon completion of the trip, provided he delivered a dentistry machine to London.

Nadeau transported the 38-kilogram machine across 14 countries, ultimately leaving it with an unknown individual in Paris, as per court records. His stays in each country were brief, with the organizer directing his next destination via WhatsApp.

Nadeau testified that he never received the promised money from this trip. Therefore, when he was later instructed to travel from South Africa with a gift, he initially refused, citing his reluctance to repeat the experience with the dentistry machine.

Contradictory Testimony and Judicial Findings

Despite his initial hesitation, Nadeau eventually boarded the plane with the suitcase after a cursory inspection. In his June 2025 decision, Judge de Champlain concluded that Nadeau exhibited willful blindness regarding the potential presence of illicit substances in the suitcase. The judge also expressed skepticism regarding Nadeau’s claims that the two international trips, both promising identical sums of money, were unrelated. Furthermore, the court did not find Nadeau to be particularly vulnerable to fraudulent online messages in this specific case.

During the sentencing, the judge highlighted inconsistencies in Nadeau’s narrative and his extensive travel experience. “The court did not find that the offender was the victim of phishing,” Judge de Champlain stated, concluding that the evidence did not support Nadeau’s assertion of being duped.
