Premier League Clubs in Last-Minute Transfer Negotiations
Arsenal have reportedly initiated urgent discussions with Newcastle United regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Sandro Tonali. The surprising late-window move comes as the London club seeks midfield reinforcements following Mikel Merino’s significant foot injury.
Transfer Deadline Pressure Mounts
With less than 12 hours remaining before the January transfer window closes, negotiations between the Premier League rivals face considerable challenges. Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate Newcastle remain reluctant to sanction a sale for their 25-year-old Italian international, who remains under contract until 2029.
Tonali has established himself as a crucial component of Eddie Howe’s squad since completing a ten-month suspension for betting violations. The midfielder joined Newcastle in July 2023 for a club-record £55 million transfer from AC Milan, making him the most expensive Italian player in football history.
Midfield Emergency Spurs Arsenal Action
Arsenal’s sudden interest follows confirmation that Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino requires surgery for a bone injury sustained during the Manchester United fixture on January 25. Club medical staff confirmed the 29-year-old will be sidelined for an extended period, with recovery expected to continue through most of the remaining season.
“Following specialist assessments, we can confirm Mikel has sustained a bone injury requiring surgical intervention,” an official club statement noted. “Our entire focus remains on supporting his rehabilitation with the objective of returning before season’s end.”
Tonali’s potential acquisition would provide immediate depth to Arsenal’s midfield options. The Italian has made 67 Premier League appearances since his controversial arrival on Tyneside, despite missing substantial playing time during his initial suspension period.
