Gary Sweet Opens Up About Family History
Australian actor Gary Sweet shared a deeply personal family secret during the latest episode of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Australia. The 68-year-old star, known for his roles in popular TV series, revealed to his campmates that he grew up believing his aunt and uncle were his biological parents.
Sweet explained that his biological father was actually his uncle, who raised him as his own from infancy. Addressing his fellow contestants, he said, ‘Would you like to hear something weird?’ before recounting the story for the first time publicly. ‘In my dad’s family, there were eight kids. The two closest were Bill and Phil. Bill and his wife had four daughters. They were getting divorced, but she was pregnant. The baby was me. So my biological parents became my uncle and auntie, and my sisters became my cousins.’
He emphasized the rarity of sharing this detail, stating, ‘I’ve never, ever, ever told this story.’
Early Life and Move to Melbourne
Sweet spent his early years in Adelaide under the care of his aunt and uncle, who were unable to have children of their own. He viewed the arrangement positively, noting, ‘It’s a good thing to grow up with people who really, really wanted you that badly.’ In 1980, he relocated to Melbourne to pursue acting opportunities.
Regarding interactions with his biological parents after the move, Sweet mentioned limited discussions on the topic. ‘When I moved to Melbourne, I used to see my biological father quite a bit. It never really came up. Um, occasionally, if he was drunk, he’d say stuff (about it).’
