Ronnie O’Sullivan prepares to return to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield for the World Snooker Seniors Championship, which begins later this week. The seven-time world champion recently reached the last 16 at the 2026 World Snooker Championship at the same venue.
Hawkins Explains O’Sullivan’s Participation
Barry Hawkins, a former rival of O’Sullivan, suggests that a substantial appearance fee and the player’s passion for snooker motivate his involvement. Hawkins stated: “It’s unusual that Ronnie’s playing in the Seniors, but I reckon he must be getting paid quite a lot of money to be there. He’s obviously been invited there to promote it, so I’m sure he’ll be getting a nice appearance fee.”
Hawkins expressed surprise at O’Sullivan’s commitment, given the intense preparation for the main World Championship. He noted: “I was a bit surprised to see him get involved, because he’s got such a big build-up for the World Championship, and he’ll have been putting himself through the wringer with the practice for that.”
However, the seniors event offers less pressure. “At the Seniors, he will just be under less pressure. It will just be a bit of fun for him, so maybe that’s the reason why he’s having it. He can just enjoy himself after the gruelling possible 17 days at the Crucible,” Hawkins added.
Favorites and Field Outlook
Hawkins views O’Sullivan as the top favorite, citing his recent form at the World Open. Strong contenders include Ali Carter, Stuart Bingham, and Matthew Stevens. He mentioned that the seniors table features larger pockets, potentially leveling the competition.
Retirement Speculation Dismissed
Despite O’Sullivan’s past hints at retirement, Hawkins believes the 50-year-old remains committed. “I don’t think he will be thinking about retirement. I think Ronnie simply loves the game. It gives him structure and routine in his life,” Hawkins said.
Hawkins highlighted O’Sullivan’s dedication, including rigorous practice sessions observed in China. He anticipates a strong push over the next few years to overcome recent challenges. Factors like O’Sullivan’s Dubai residency for tax purposes may have limited his event schedule, but that could change soon, allowing more appearances.
