A poignant memorial service was held in Malibu, California, on Saturday to honor the life of actress Hayden Panettiere. The celebration of life, hosted at Malibu Pacific Church, drew a gathering of friends, family, and colleagues from the entertainment industry, including many who shared the screen with the late star.
Tributes from ‘Nashville’ Costars and Industry Peers
Among the notable attendees were Panettiere’s former ‘Nashville’ costars Connie Britton, Jonathan Jackson, and Sam Palladio. Their presence underscored the deep bonds formed during their time working together on the popular television series. Other prominent figures who paid their respects included actresses Beverly D’Angelo and Ruby Rose, actor Evan Ross, filmmaker Storm Santos, celebrity colorist Erick Orellana, and makeup artist Beau Nelson. The event brought together approximately 150 guests, comprising friends and various figures from the entertainment world.
The ceremony commenced around 5 p.m. outside the church. Guests were treated to food from Pizza Girl on a mezzanine area. A symbolic moment occurred shortly after, around 5:30 p.m., when several doves were released into the air, a gesture often representing peace and remembrance.
Inside the Moving Ceremony
Following the outdoor gathering, attendees moved inside the church for the main ceremony. A large photograph of Hayden Panettiere was prominently displayed, accompanied by an inscription that read: ‘Honoring the life & legacy Hayden Panettiere 8.12.89 – 8.16.26.’ The sentiment captured the essence of the event – a heartfelt tribute to her life and enduring impact.
During the service, emotional moments were shared. ‘Nashville’ actor Jonathan Jackson was seen in tears, finding comfort from fellow cast member Sam Palladio. Connie Britton and Charles Esten, another ‘Nashville’ alum, delivered speeches. Esten also performed a song from their show, adding a musical element to the tributes.
Security was visible at the church entrance throughout the evening, with local Sheriff’s deputies also in attendance, ensuring the privacy and security of the mourners. The celebration of life concluded around 7:30 p.m., leaving attendees with a sense of shared grief and remembrance.
Family Attendance and Relationships
Reports indicated that Panettiere’s mother, Leslie Vogel, from whom the actress was reportedly estranged, was not in attendance. However, her father, Skip, was present. A source close to Vogel stated that she was not invited but could not attend due to a family emergency.
Notably absent from the memorial were Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach. According to reports, the brothers understood their exclusion from the event.
Circumstances of Panettiere’s Death
Hayden Panettiere passed away at the age of 36. Her death occurred about a month prior to the memorial, following cardiac arrest that was reportedly linked to a suspected overdose. At the time of her death, she was staying at an Airbnb in South Carolina with Brian Hickerson, 37, and his brother Zach, 38.
Law enforcement officials confirmed responding to a 911 call from an acquaintance who described Panettiere as ‘unresponsive.’ Narcan, an opioid overdose reversal medication, was found at the scene. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office stated that an autopsy had been completed, and no signs of trauma were found on her body.
According to the incident report from the Greenville Police Department, Zach Hickerson informed the authorities that Brian was in a separate room when he discovered Panettiere unresponsive. Zach stated that Brian administered Narcan and that they performed CPR while on the phone with 911 dispatchers.
Recent Legal Troubles for the Hickerson Brothers
In the weeks following Panettiere’s death, Brian and Zach Hickerson have faced legal issues. They were involved in an altercation at a bar, which led to Brian’s detainment and Zach’s arrest for disorderly conduct. An eyewitness reported that the incident occurred after other patrons allegedly made remarks about Panettiere’s passing.
Panettiere and Brian Hickerson had a tumultuous relationship that began in 2018. Hickerson had faced multiple arrests and charges related to domestic abuse during their relationship. In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend, which resulted in jail time, probation, domestic violence classes, restitution, and a five-year protective order.
Zach Hickerson previously commented on the speculation surrounding his involvement, stating, ‘There are a lot of assumptions, speculations and accusations currently swirling. The truth will come out as the authorities complete and release additional details from the investigation.’ He emphasized the need for the truth to emerge for those who loved Hayden and called for peace for her family and friends to mourn.
The memorial service served as a space for those closest to Hayden Panettiere to come together, share memories, and begin the process of healing, focusing on her life and legacy amidst the difficult circumstances surrounding her passing.
