Colin Kaepernick, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, announces the upcoming release of his memoir The Perilous Fight on September 15, marking nearly a decade since his national anthem protest began.

Book Details and Themes

The memoir, titled after a lyric from ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ blends personal narrative and manifesto. It traces Kaepernick’s journey from a Black child grappling with identity to an athlete confronting broader social issues. Legacy Lit, the publisher, highlights how a single act of protest sparked a movement reshaping American sports and culture.

Kaepernick narrates the audio edition, available exclusively on Audible.

Origins of the Protest

In 2016, Kaepernick first sat, then knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. He explains the decision stemmed from years of reflection on personal injustices and historical voices. ‘People saw the moment. But they didn’t see the years that made it possible: the questions about who I was; the injustices I could no longer ignore; the voices of those who came before me that I carried into that stadium,’ Kaepernick states. ‘That journey… shaped everything. When I took a knee, it wasn’t a sudden act.’

The protest divided opinions. Supporters praised it for spotlighting Black oppression, while critics burned jerseys and issued death threats. In August 2016, Donald Trump suggested Kaepernick ‘find a country that works better for him.’

NFL Career and Blackball Claims

Kaepernick, now 38, played six seasons with the 49ers, leading them to Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, a 34-31 loss to Baltimore. He has not appeared in an NFL game since 2016, despite multiple tryouts, and claims the league blackballed him.

Post-NFL Activities

Over the past decade, Kaepernick has emerged as a prominent voice on social issues. He launched his own publishing imprint and co-authored children’s book We Are Free, You & Me and graphic novel Change the Game.
