Wayne Rooney, Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances since joining in 2004, watched from the stands with evident pride. Wayne also holds the record as England’s top international goalscorer, retiring in 2021 after a storied career. Kai’s appearance draws natural parallels, but his parents have long emphasized avoiding undue pressure on their children.
To support Kai’s development, the family allowed him to join Manchester City at age seven when he expressed dissatisfaction at United. He later departed City following Wayne’s move to DC United in America, rejoining United’s academy in 2020. This debut provided a rare opportunity for Wayne to witness his son perform at the iconic venue.
Navigating Fame and Family Support
Coleen Rooney has shared insights into the challenges of raising children in the spotlight. During her 2024 appearance on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, she recounted how Kai once asked Wayne to skip grassroots games due to overwhelming crowds. “Kai told Wayne to stop coming to football games when he played grassroots tournaments and stuff, because he used to get swarmed, and he couldn’t even watch the game,” she explained. “How do you say to all of these kids, ‘Go away, I’m watching my son?’ Adults, it’s different, you could speak to them, so he just said, ‘Oh, dad, there’s no point you coming because you don’t even watch me play anyway.’ Which is sad, but it can’t be helped.”
Kai had already made his U18 debut earlier this season at age 15. At the Derby match, Wayne and Coleen captured photos as he warmed up, having previously joined his father for laps of honor at the stadium. Post-match, Wayne posted a throwback photo with a young Kai on social media, captioning it: “Then and now. Proud of you, Kai.”
The family sat near interim first-team manager Michael Carrick, whose son also features in United’s academy. Wayne has voiced strong support for the club’s youth system, recently critiquing aspects of former manager Ruben Amorim’s approach.

In September 2024, Coleen outlined the family’s parenting philosophy. “We’ve never pressured them into even playing football,” she stated. “We’ve always just let them decide what they want to do. My eight-year-old was playing and doing really well but then decided he didn’t want to, and that’s OK.”
She addressed external pressures, noting: “I think they sometimes get pressure off other people, you know. People approach them now and then if we’re out, they do say, ‘Are you as good as your dad?’ Kai says, ‘I’m a different type of player.’ You’ve got to let them know that you don’t have to follow and to be your own person.”
