Elevate Your Kitchen: Ditch These Design Pitfalls for a Chic Look
The kitchen is a central hub of the home, making its design and decor particularly impactful. While some prefer a minimalist aesthetic, others embrace bolder choices. However, certain design elements can inadvertently steer a kitchen from stylish to dated and inexpensive. Interior design expert Penny Modern has identified five common features that can detract from a kitchen’s overall appeal, suggesting that true sophistication often comes from what is removed rather than what is added.
1. Exposed Trash Bins
An “exposed” bin, regardless of its design, is a primary offender in making a kitchen appear cheap. Penny Modern emphasizes that a dirty or grimy trash can, even if tucked away in a corner, significantly diminishes a kitchen’s aesthetic. “Nothing cheapens a beautiful kitchen more than a dirty, grimy trash can sitting off in the corner,” she stated. Beyond visual clutter, exposed bins can remind occupants of waste and potentially lead to unpleasant odors. While essential for functionality, opting for concealed bins integrated into cabinetry offers a streamlined and sophisticated look. Alternatively, a discreetly placed stainless steel bin can help the bin “disappear” and remain as unobtrusive as possible.
2. Visible Pot Racks
For kitchens with limited cupboard space, pot racks are often installed to store cookware. While intended to evoke a professional kitchen feel, in many domestic settings, these racks can result in a cluttered and chaotic appearance. Modern noted that unless one possesses high-end, matching cookware, visible pot racks can make a kitchen seem “cheap.” They can also obstruct sightlines, making the space feel smaller, and the cookware may accumulate dust and grease. As an alternative, interior designers suggest using dividers within large cupboards to store pots and pans horizontally. For those with very limited space, storing cookware inside the oven when not in use is another practical option.
3. Clutter on Top of Cabinets
When kitchen cabinets do not extend to the ceiling, the temptation to fill the space above them with decorative items can be strong. However, displaying numerous objects like photographs, wine bottles, or artificial plants in this area can make a kitchen appear cluttered, smaller, and less sophisticated. “Clutter that draws the eyes upwards, and it’s very distracting,” explained Modern. The most effective solution, according to the designer, is to clear away any items from atop the cabinets and embrace the empty space for a cleaner look.
4. Generic Word Art Signs
Decorative signs featuring phrases such as “kitchen” or “eat, pray, love” can contribute to a cluttered feel and lack charm. Many of these signs are mass-produced, which can make a kitchen feel generic rather than luxurious. Instead of opting for such mass-market decor, consider investing in genuine artwork. This could be a landscape from a memorable trip or smaller pieces that add personal character. “It doesn’t have to be expensive,” Modern advised, suggesting that printed items or smaller, curated pieces can be an excellent alternative.
5. Mismatched Appliance Finishes
Achieving a cohesive and luxurious look in the kitchen can be challenging when appliances have different finishes. While appliances naturally need replacing at different times, a mix of white, black, and stainless steel can create a “jumbled mess” and suggest a lack of intentional design. “You definitely don’t want to have a white dishwasher, a black fridge and a stainless steel stove; it’s just going to look like a jumbled mess and that you just bought anything that was on sale,” Modern observed. For a high-end appearance, consider investing in panel-ready appliances, such as a refrigerator with a custom panel that hides its finish, a trend commonly seen in luxury homes.
