Liverpool must find a suitable replacement for Mohamed Salah, the star winger who confirmed his exit at the season’s end following a trophy-filled stint at Anfield. Experts point to West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, 29, as a strong candidate to step into Salah’s role.
Former Striker Backs Bowen Transfer
John Aldridge, a former Liverpool striker with 64 goals in 104 appearances, endorses Bowen for the position. He emphasizes the player’s Premier League experience and potential impact.
“I’ve looked at Jarrod Bowen for some years now, and I really like the way he plays football, and what he offers West Ham,” Aldridge stated. “I joined Liverpool when I was 28 or 29. There are a good couple of years left in him.”
Aldridge notes Bowen’s suitability over younger prospects like RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, citing his adaptation to British football. “Jarrod Bowen is a more solid option… He’s used to the Premier League, he’s used to British life,” he said. “For someone to take over from Mohamed Salah, it’s got to be someone solid, someone who’s done it. Ticks all the boxes, has experience. Someone with pace, we need pace.”
Aldridge predicts Bowen could deliver 15 goals and numerous assists per season. West Ham’s potential relegation could lower the transfer fee, making the move more feasible for new manager Arne Slot.
Klopp’s Longstanding Admiration
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s former manager, frequently praised Bowen. Ahead of a December 2023 Carabao Cup clash, Klopp called him “probably my favourite player besides my players,” adding, “It’s just great what he’s doing and how he develops.”
Earlier, in November 2021, Klopp said: “I like Bowen a lot. He made his way up from Hull and took not too long to get there, to show exactly what kind of player he can be in the Premier League as well.” Months later, he remarked: “Bowen, what a player he became, unbelievable. We saw him at Hull as well, and he was really good that time, but I’m not sure many people expected this jump. Unbelievable player.”
Bowen’s Proven Record
West Ham signed Bowen from Hull City in January 2020, where he has since scored 84 goals in 274 matches. The England international’s contract at the London Stadium extends to June 2030, likely commanding a substantial fee unless relegation alters the landscape.
