A brawl involving several teenagers erupted in the food court of Melbourne’s Northland Shopping Centre on Friday night, leading to the arrest of four girls and an 18-year-old woman. The incident, which saw a knife allegedly produced, is the latest in a string of disturbances at the popular retail destination and other Melbourne shopping centres.

Teenagers Detained After Northland Shopping Centre Altercation

Victoria Police reported that officers on patrol in the Northland Shopping Centre’s food court in Preston observed a group of females engaged in a physical altercation on Friday evening. Responding swiftly, police took five individuals into custody: four girls, aged 12, 14, 16, and 17, and an 18-year-old woman.

During the incident, the 14-year-old sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The 12-year-old also suffered minor injuries, which were attended to by ambulance paramedics. She was subsequently released pending further investigation.

The 18-year-old, identified as being from Coburg North, along with the 16 and 17-year-old girls, were interviewed by police. Authorities indicated that these individuals are expected to be charged on summons, a legal process that typically involves a court order to appear rather than immediate arrest.

Weapon Seized Amidst Shopping Centre Brawl

Further complicating the situation, officers from Victoria Police’s Operation Pulse seized a knife that was allegedly brandished during the brawl. Detectives from the Banyule Crime Investigation Unit have taken charge of the investigation, examining the full circumstances surrounding the violent encounter.

Pattern of Incidents at Melbourne Retail Hubs

Friday’s disturbance at Northland Shopping Centre is not an isolated event. It highlights a concerning trend of escalating violence and disorder at major Melbourne retail precincts in recent years. These incidents raise questions about security measures and the overall safety within these public spaces.

Previous Disturbances at Northland Shopping Centre

Northland Shopping Centre, in particular, has been the scene of significant incidents previously. In May 2025, a large-scale brawl involving approximately 10 individuals, reportedly armed with machetes, sent shoppers fleeing in panic. Police at the time suggested this attack may have been motivated by gang-related retaliation, resulting in serious injuries to one man.

Another notable event occurred in June 2025 when a vehicle was filmed driving at high speed through the shopping centre, causing alarm among patrons and prompting a police response.

Broader Trends in Shopping Centre Crime Statistics

Data from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) reveals a broader increase in reported crimes across major Melbourne shopping centres. For the 2024-25 financial year, 5,901 crimes were recorded across 13 key retail locations. This figure represents a 20 percent increase compared to the preceding year, indicating a growing challenge in maintaining public order within these busy environments.

Analysis of the CSA data identified Bayside Frankston as having the highest number of reported incidents during the surveyed period. Northland Shopping Centre ranked second, followed by Westfield Fountain Gate in third place, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue.

Community Impact and Future Concerns

The repeated instances of violence at shopping centres like Northland have a tangible impact on the community. Shoppers may feel less secure, and businesses could face increased security costs and potential disruptions. The presence of weapons, such as the knife allegedly involved in Friday’s brawl, escalates the severity of these incidents and the potential for serious harm.

Authorities are likely to face increased pressure to address these security concerns, potentially through enhanced police presence, improved surveillance, and community engagement strategies. The ongoing investigations into Friday’s incident and the broader crime statistics will be crucial in understanding the root causes and developing effective long-term solutions to ensure the safety and security of Melbourne’s shopping centres.
