Seattle Seahawks punter Michael Dickson stands one victory away from Super Bowl triumph, capping a remarkable path that began with rejection from Australia’s AFL.
Early Days in Sydney
Dickson, 30, hails from Sydney’s east and emerged through the Sydney Swans Academy as a teenager. He shared the field with current Swans captain Callum Mills and vice-captain Isaac Heeney. Despite his promise as a defender, scouts passed him over in the AFL national and rookie drafts.
Pivot to American Football
In 2015, Dickson relocated to Melbourne and joined Prokick Australia, a program directed by former AFL player Nathan Chapman that trains aspiring punters and kickers. His exceptional kicking range drew attention from University of Texas scouts, securing a scholarship with the Longhorns.
Dickson accelerated his ascent in 2018 by signing his first NFL contract with the Seahawks. Last year, he inked a $23.25 million extension through 2029, establishing him as the league’s highest-paid punter—far surpassing top AFL salaries around $1.5 million.
Praise from Mentors
Nathan Chapman highlights Dickson’s dedication. “Michael works on his craft relentlessly,” Chapman states. “He has been with a team that has really backed him, and he has delivered. It’s actually a great story. He can do it all. His ability to do so many different kicks so well—spiral, high, to the right—has been next level.”
AFL legend Paul Roos, who coached Dickson as a junior, recalls his talent. “He was a really talented player when he was a kid, but he was small,” Roos explains. Roos describes Dickson’s “beautiful kick” and expresses no surprise at his NFL success. The pair maintain contact.
Aussie Precedents in the NFL
Dickson aims to follow Jordan Mailata, the former South Sydney Rabbitohs player who claimed a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025. Fellow Australian Jesse Williams earned a ring with the Seahawks’ 2013 championship team, though injury sidelined him from playing.
The Seahawks face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on February 9, with kickoff at 10:30 a.m. AEDT. Dickson’s versatile punts have proven vital in Seattle’s playoff push, endearing him to fans.
