A mechanic highlights a 20-year-old used car as one of the most dependable options available in the UK. Paul Lucas praises the Mk1 Ford Focus for its simple design and proven reliability, making it an ideal choice for buyers.

Mk1 Ford Focus: A Budget-Friendly Reliability Champion

Paul Lucas, who owns a Mk1 Ford Focus, bought his 1.6-litre model for £500 about 16 years ago. With regular maintenance, the vehicle has performed flawlessly. He states: “For me, a 20-year-old 1.6 litre Mk1 Ford Focus is top for reliability. It was designed before all the unnecessary bells and whistles came in and even lets you start the car with a real key rather than press a button. I bought mine 15 years ago for £500 and have no regrets.”

The car’s straightforward engineering avoids modern complexities, contributing to its long-term durability.

Expert Alternative: Toyota Yaris Takes the Lead

Other automotive leaders offer different recommendations. William Fletcher, CEO of car.co.uk, ranks the Toyota Yaris as the top reliable car on UK roads. He notes: “The humble Toyota Yaris, the 58th most popular car model in the UK, is one of the most reliable cars on British roads, with thousands of owners reporting zero faults in a given year. Backed by Toyota’s reputation for durability, the Yaris benefits from simple, well-proven engineering and is highly dependable. Repair costs are typically low, it sits in modest insurance groups, and Toyota’s warranty can extend up to 10 years when serviced within the network – making it one of the safest bets for hassle-free, affordable motoring.”

Electric Vehicles Gaining Traction

In the electric vehicle segment, several models earn top awards. Journalist Christopher Sharp recently tested the “EV Car of the Year,” which competes with luxury brands like BMW, Audi, and Porsche. While he commended its performance overall, he identified one notable drawback.
