From Frustration to Fulfillment Overseas

Three years ago, Paul Leszczynski, a 32-year-old Polish-American screenwriter, left Los Angeles feeling broke and disillusioned with modern American dating. He described U.S. women as ‘too tough to deal with or only interested in money.’ In April 2023, he took a one-way flight and immersed himself in the ‘passport bros’ lifestyle, a trend where American and British men seek romance abroad to escape Western dating challenges.

Now 34 and living in Poland with his wife, Leszczynski, known online as Passport Paulie, shares his transformation. ‘Guys do not realize how good life can be,’ he said. ‘It is inconceivable, I think, to so many men, how much better life is abroad.’

Adventures and Lasting Connections

Leszczynski traveled through Colombia, Brazil, Thailand, and Indonesia, enjoying multiple dates daily. In Asunción, Paraguay, he met his Venezuelan wife at a bar. He canceled upcoming dates, including one with a professional model, and they married months later.

Austin Abeyta, 32, from Colorado Springs, embodies the digital nomad side of the movement. Working remotely, he enjoys affordable luxuries in the Philippines with his Filipina girlfriend, Jewel Clyte. Their routine includes morning coffee work sessions, beach scooter rides, cheap whiskey lunches, and moonlit parties. Now in a Vietnamese beach city creating content together, Abeyta calls it the ‘ultimate life-hack in 2026.’

Mike the Maverick, a Californian in Thailand, highlights emotional rewards. His fiancée Pafan greets him with flowers at the airport and tends to him at home. ‘Most Thai women bring this kind of soft, feminine energy,’ he posted. ‘It feels good being a traditional man who protects and provides – and actually getting that traditional feminine energy back.’

Roots in Modern Dating Struggles

The trend stems from frustrations with dating apps, shifting gender roles, and political divides. Young women outperform men in college enrollment, graduation rates, and entry-level jobs, per federal data and Pew Research Center analysis. Young men face rising depression, isolation, and job struggles, according to Gallup and the American Institute for Boys and Men.

Politically, young men lean conservative, while women favor progressive views. A 2026 Ipsos survey across 30 countries found 61% of Gen Z men believe women’s rights have ‘gone far enough,’ with many preferring traditional roles where wives defer to husbands.

Practical Advice for Newcomers

Leszczynski urges men to skip popular spots like Medellín, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Bangkok, which attract sex tourists and risks. In Medellín, he was drugged and robbed on a date, losing his wallet, cards, and laptop. He shares tips in his book ‘How to Find Your Latina Wife’: ‘Definitely don’t bring a girl back to your apartment before going out. It’s probably bad news.’

Instead, he recommends ‘tier-two cities’ where Americans stand out. ‘It’s like fishing in a barrel – in the right city,’ he said. After initial promiscuity lost its appeal, he turned religious and settled down. ‘It’s like the dog that chases the truck,’ he explained. ‘Once you actually go do it, you realize how fleeting and inconsequential it is.’

His travels include Costa Rica, Poland, Brazil, Peru, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Morocco, Spain, Croatia, Greece, Paraguay, and Colombia.

Critics Raise Concerns

Not all view the movement positively. Julia Meszaros, a sociology professor at Texas A&M University, sees it as a social media evolution of mail-order brides. Social scientist Katie Jagielnicka, observing pursuits in Poland, calls it a ‘disgusting, predatory and heavily misogynistic practice’ that fetishizes women from developing countries.

Links to ‘manosphere’ and incel cultures persist, with some influencers prioritizing monetization. Leszczynski faced an Instagram ban, blamed on mass reports and death threats from critics, disrupting plans to move to Spain and start a family.

His wife remains central: she suggested his influencer career, cared for his grandmother, chose their home, and picked the wedding location. Leszczynski emphasizes helping men escape U.S. depression: ‘I really want to help guys who are in a really bad depressive state in the US get out and live a happier life abroad.’
