PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp emphasizes extending the Strategic Alliance with the DP World Tour to foster greater mutual benefits. Established in 2020, the partnership facilitates collaboration on commercial opportunities and provides 10 PGA Tour cards through the Race to Dubai Rankings. Players like Bob MacIntyre have earned spots on the PGA Tour via this pathway over the past three years.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
During discussions at PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Rolapp highlighted the alliance’s value. Attending were DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings and chairman Eric Nicoli.
“The Strategic Alliance predates me, but the importance of the DP World Tour and its history with the PGA Tour stands strong,” Rolapp stated. “We value this partnership, as do many members. We proposed an extension to create even more mutual benefits.”
International Focus in Tour Vision
Rolapp envisions an international dimension for the PGA Tour beyond major U.S. cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago. When asked about global elements, he responded affirmatively.
“This goes beyond the U.S., though most events remain domestic due to business realities,” he explained. “We aim to expand internationally, especially in fall and summer slots. The Strategic Alliance plays a key role here.”
The Genesis Scottish Open exemplifies co-sanctioned events outside the U.S.
Overhauling the Schedule
Under Tiger Woods’ leadership of the Future Competition Committee, the PGA Tour plans a promotion and relegation system akin to European football. Proposals include doubling Signature Events to 16, with 120-player fields and 36-hole cuts. Top-track players would compete in 21-26 events, incorporating majors and playoffs.
A parallel second track culminates in an end-of-season tournament determining promotion and relegation.
“Both tracks will elevate competition quality,” Rolapp insisted. “This creates a cohesive system lifting the entire tour, not subordinating one path.”
The core schedule spans late January to early September, launching at an iconic West Coast venue. Match play may integrate into playoffs for added drama.
“Fans and partners demand more excitement,” Rolapp declared. “We’re exploring match play at the Tour Championship or postseason for win-or-go-home stakes.”
