Dogs express their affection through subtle behaviors that signal a strong bond with their owners. These signs reveal deep trust and companionship, helping owners appreciate their pet’s devotion. While each dog has a unique personality, certain common indicators show that you are their preferred human and safe haven.

Adem Fehmi, a dog behaviour specialist at Barking Heads, explains that a dog’s love builds on trust fostered by affection, food, toys, exercise, and play. These elements meet their needs as social animals, leading to stronger attachments to primary caregivers.

Five Clear Signs of Your Dog’s Love

1. Actively Seeking Your Company

Dogs that love you follow you around the house, greet you eagerly at the door, or snuggle next to you on the couch. Fehmi notes this as a primary sign, but cautions that excessive shadowing might indicate anxiety rather than pure affection. In such cases, professional behavioral advice can build confidence.

2. Relaxing Fully in Your Presence

A content dog relaxes completely around you, often lying on its side or back with paws up—a vulnerable position that demonstrates trust. Fehmi states, “A happy and content dog will be able to fully relax in your presence.”

3. Displaying Calm Body Language

Look for relaxed tail wags and soft facial expressions. These gentle cues reflect comfort and joy in your company.

4. Leaning Into Your Touch

When petted, many dogs lean back into your hand if they enjoy it and feel a strong connection. Fehmi observes, “Many will lean back into you when being stroked if they are enjoying the experience and, particularly, if they have a strong bond with you.”

5. Showing Enthusiasm for Walks and Play

Dogs eager for walks or games with you—and even starting play themselves—feel secure in your presence. Fehmi adds, “A dog that is happy to engage with you is a dog who feels secure when you are around. Furthermore, instigating play is a way to gain your affection and attention, which can be a key indicator that your dog values your presence.”
