Housing Minister Steve Reed defended Prime Minister Keir Starmer, insisting he is ‘fine’ and focused on the job amid growing speculation over a Labour leadership challenge from Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Reed Warns Against Leadership Turmoil

Reed toured TV and radio studios, emphasizing that Starmer remains steady despite public frustration with public services and the economy. He cautioned against rapid leadership changes, comparing them to the Conservatives’ frequent prime ministerial shifts.

‘What happens when you’re the leader of the Government at a time when the public are so angry with the state of our public services and the economy, is it focuses down on that individual,’ Reed told Sky News. ‘So we can either copy the Tories, they doom scrolled through leader after leader, five I think, in eight years, prime ministers. It didn’t help them one jot. What we need to do is all of us come together behind the Prime Minister and focus on how we can deliver the change the British public want to see faster.’

Burnham’s Bold Return to Westminster

Burnham confirmed plans to seek a Commons seat in the Makerfield by-election, following Labour MP Josh Simons’ decision to step aside. Observers view this as a stepping stone to challenging Starmer for Labour leadership.

The seat, held by Labour since 1983, faces a tough fight. Reform UK dominated recent local elections, winning all eight wards. Polling from Britain Predicts shows Reform leading by 13 points if an election occurred now. Nigel Farage pledged to ‘throw absolutely everything’ at the contest, marking it as the most significant by-election in decades.

Stroud MP Simon Opher, a Burnham supporter, acknowledged the challenge but stated on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme: ‘He could win the next election for Labour.’

Burnham aims to ‘make politics work properly for people’ and ‘drive the change our country is crying out for.’ The Prime Minister will not oppose his candidacy, pending approval from Labour’s National Executive Committee next week.

Wider Labour Tensions and Market Reaction

Recent developments include Wes Streeting’s resignation as Health Secretary, with Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband positioned as potential contenders. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch criticized the infighting, warning it would paralyze government reforms post-local election setbacks.

‘The Labour Party has now descended into civil war. And while they’re sharpening their knives and plotting in the bars of Westminster, nobody is running the country,’ Badenoch stated.

The pound dropped to its lowest in a month, below $1.34, amid fears of a leftward policy shift. A Whitehall source indicated civil servants may pause work until leadership clarity emerges.
