British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that global attention must stay fixed on Ukraine’s defense against Russia, even as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran intensifies. The leaders met in London, where they signed a new defense partnership targeting drone threats.
Key Discussions in London
During the Tuesday meeting at Downing Street, Starmer hosted Zelensky following his recent Paris visit and ahead of a planned trip to Madrid. The talks highlighted concerns that the escalating Middle East tensions are eclipsing Ukraine’s ongoing battle, now in its fourth year.
Efforts by the United States to broker a peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow have stalled, with the latest three-party negotiations disrupted by the Iran war. No rescheduled date exists, and Washington has eased some sanctions on Moscow to stabilize surging oil prices triggered by regional instability.
“The focus must remain on Ukraine,” Starmer stated. “A conflict rages in the Middle East, but we cannot divert attention from Ukraine or the vital support it requires.”
New UK-Ukraine Defense Agreement
The partnership harnesses Ukraine’s battle-tested knowledge in countering drones—gained from repelling Russian attacks—alongside Britain’s manufacturing strengths to produce and deploy advanced drone technologies. It allocates £500,000 ($670,000) to establish an AI Center of Excellence within Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.
This initiative aims to enhance worldwide defenses against affordable, high-tech weapons like drones, which Iran has deployed via ballistic missiles against Israel and in strikes on Gulf nations since the conflict erupted late last month.
Zelensky Addresses UK Parliament
Speaking to Members of Parliament, Zelensky revealed that 201 Ukrainian anti-drone specialists are assisting Middle East allies against Iranian-designed Shahed drones, previously used by Russia in Ukraine. Teams operate in the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, with another 34 experts prepared for deployment to Kuwait.
“We do not want the Iranian regime’s terror against its neighbors to prevail,” Zelensky declared in his 30-minute address, underscoring Ukraine’s expertise forged in four years of warfare.
Continued Allied Commitment
Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s steadfast backing, declaring, “Our resolve is unbreakable.” Zelensky also held a private audience with King Charles at Buckingham Palace, later expressing gratitude on X for the Royal Family’s “unwavering support and solidarity.”
The Ukrainian president planned a subsequent meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in London.
