Wally Daudrich, a former candidate for leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba, has announced his departure from the party, stating he feels “abandoned” by its current direction. Daudrich, a longtime party board member and a figure known for his socially conservative views, expressed his disillusionment in a letter sent to party leadership on Saturday. He indicated that he is now seeking a new political affiliation.

Reasons for Departure

Daudrich’s decision follows an announcement earlier this month from the party executive that he would not be permitted to seek the nomination in the Turtle Mountain constituency. This move came despite incumbent Doyle Piwniuk deciding not to seek re-election in the next provincial vote, which is constitutionally mandated to occur by October 5, 2027. The party cited alleged violations of its constitution and “repeated disparaging comments regarding current and former Progressive Conservative MLAs” as reasons for disallowing his nomination.

However, Daudrich contested this timeline and reasoning. He stated in an interview that the decision to block his nomination was made just eight days before the nomination vote, and only after it became apparent he had sold significantly more party memberships than his sole rival, Mark Custance, a rural councillor. Daudrich, who owns a tourism business and a home within the constituency he sought to represent, described investing six months of effort into campaigning in Turtle Mountain and selling “hundreds of memberships.” He suggested that the timing of the disqualification was directly linked to his apparent success in membership sales.

Membership Refunds and Independent Run

Daudrich revealed that he contacted many of the individuals to whom he had sold PC memberships, offering to refund their money out of his own pocket. He reported that a common response from these individuals was encouragement for him to run as an independent candidate. While he did not confirm this as his immediate plan, he acknowledged the sentiment expressed by his supporters. His broader aspiration, he explained, is to see a “legitimate conservative candidate in each riding” and for party leaders to prioritize serving their members over what he described as the “autocrats” currently in the legislature.

Political Background and Shifting Party Ideology

Daudrich has a history of involvement with the Manitoba PCs, having worked with every leader since former premier Gary Filmon. His contributions included recruiting candidates, fundraising, and organizing efforts in northern Manitoba. Political commentators have noted that Daudrich’s socially conservative platform resonates more strongly with the party’s rural base, contrasting with the urban electorate in Winnipeg, which current PC Leader Obby Khan has reportedly targeted.

During the previous PC leadership race, Daudrich garnered more votes than Khan, though Khan ultimately won due to a weighted ballot system based on constituencies. Khan, in a prepared statement, acknowledged Daudrich’s differing perspective on conservatism in Manitoba. He stated that the Progressive Conservatives are focused on providing “real solutions and a pragmatic vision” and that “all healthy political landscapes have room for differences.” Khan extended an invitation for any Manitoban to present their vision for the province.

Daudrich, who purchased the former PC party headquarters on Kennedy Street for his tourism business, asserted that the party has shifted too far to the left, leaving no space for “small-c conservatives” like himself. He characterized the current PC party as a “new liberal party,” leaving him feeling “politically homeless.”

Controversial Past Remarks and Future Considerations

Daudrich gained notoriety during last year’s leadership race for a controversial remark suggesting the introduction of polar bears into Winnipeg to address homelessness. He had stated, “When there are serious repercussions for a bad lifestyle, people smarten up very quickly. So my plan is to import 10 polar bears and let them go in front of the (Manitoba legislature).” He later clarified this as a hyperbolic statement intended to highlight the lack of consequences for certain behaviors.

Looking ahead, Daudrich plans to consult with his supporters to determine his next steps. He mentioned having met with Keystone Party leader Kevin Friesen several months prior, discussing shared views on the role of government. The Keystone Party, a right-leaning populist group with rural origins, had unsuccessfully sought to attract disaffected PC voters in the 2023 provincial election. Daudrich expressed openness to cooperation but indicated he would await the formation of a new conservative movement. He emphasized that his goal is to contribute to the establishment of a new conservative movement, not necessarily to lead it, but to help bring “good, principled, servant-leadership-style-people” into government, away from what he perceives as “ineffectual, self-absorbed leadership” on both sides of the legislature.

Key Takeaways:

  • Wally Daudrich has left the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party.
  • He cites feeling “abandoned” by the party and being blocked from seeking nomination in Turtle Mountain.
  • Daudrich alleges the nomination block was due to his strong membership sales, outperforming his rival.
  • He is considering his next political steps, potentially as an independent or within a new conservative movement.
  • Current PC Leader Obby Khan acknowledged Daudrich’s differing views and welcomed diverse perspectives within the party.
