An 86-year-old realtor who cherished luxury vanished into the California desert following a heated argument with her daughter and grandson. Authorities later recovered her body at a popular scenic spot in the Mojave Desert.
Timeline of the Disappearance
Lorraine Bird disappeared from her home in Twentynine Palms on May 10, 2025, around noon. Her family reported her missing on May 13. She suffered from early-stage dementia and left without her medications, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Real estate attorney Sherry Lear revealed that tensions boiled over before Bird’s vanishing. Bird clashed with her daughter, Doreen Bird, 65, and grandson, Blake Thomas, amid disputes over the sale of her $247,000 home.
Family Conflicts Over Property
Doreen had invested in home improvements, while Blake contributed to the initial down payment. Blake sought a deed of trust to secure his interest in the property. Feeling pressured, Bird consulted Lear for guidance.
“Lorraine was very upset. She said this wasn’t the first time that Doreen had yelled at her. And that she was afraid of her,” Lear recounted. Doreen allegedly threatened to cut off utilities unless Bird signed the documents.
Lear issued a cease-and-desist letter to Doreen and Blake. Bird then signed a promissory note promising Blake $30,000 upon the home’s sale, with provisions forgiving the debt if he received 80% of the property titles after her death.
Grim Discovery in the Desert
On May 19, a female livestreamer exploring Graffiti Rocks in the Johnson Valley area of the Mojave Desert discovered Bird’s body curled among boulders, clad only in underwear. The content creator dialed 911 and continued streaming the scene until deputies arrived.
Bird’s gray 2022 Mercedes E-Class sedan turned up about 30 miles from the site. Officials identified her via fingerprints.
Autopsy Findings and Unanswered Questions
Nearly a year later, the autopsy lists Bird’s cause of death as undetermined due to advanced decomposition and insect activity. A broken rib occurred postmortem, forensic pathologist Michael Baden explained. Toxicology detected caffeine and a beta blocker for high blood pressure. Bird also had severe heart disease, with up to 90% narrowing in her coronary arteries.
Realtor Sandra Claus, who was handling the home sale, last spoke with Bird by phone on May 10 morning to finalize terms. She sent a contract via email but received no reply. Blake later informed Claus that Bird had traveled to Apple Valley to visit relatives after a disagreement.
Family Denials
Doreen reported Bird missing on May 13. Blake, who was in Florida at the time, stated, “She’s not supposed to not contact anybody. No matter if they were in an argument or whatever.” He added, “I loved my grandma very much and I’m very sad that she’s gone.” Both Doreen and Blake deny any role in the incident, describing the narrative as one-sided.
