A sudden storm on Saturday led to a concerning situation for two kayakers who became disoriented on the water near Waubaushene. Emergency services were alerted around 5:30 p.m. after reports surfaced that a 29-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man had lost their bearings amidst the inclement weather.
Extensive Search Operation Underway
A multi-agency response was quickly mobilized to locate the missing individuals. Responders included personnel from Tay Fire, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, County of Simcoe Paramedics, and the Southern Georgian Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The OPP significantly bolstered the search efforts by deploying its specialized marine unit, patrol officers on the ground, and a helicopter for aerial surveillance.
Kayakers Reach Safety Unharmed
While search crews were actively working to find them, the two kayakers managed to make their way to shore independently. They subsequently proceeded to a nearby residence. Police officers met with the pair to confirm their well-being and ascertain that they had sustained no injuries during the ordeal.
Severe Weather Advisory Issued
The incident occurred as Environment Canada had placed a significant portion of Simcoe County under a severe thunderstorm watch on Saturday, indicating the potential for hazardous weather conditions.
