Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy lead as pre-tournament favorites for The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, where a stacked field challenges the world’s top-ranked players. Scheffler boasts 20 PGA Tour victories since early 2022, including four majors, and seeks a third Players title in four years following his recent American Express triumph. A win would mark him as the first to claim the event three times since Jack Nicklaus.
McIlroy, the defending champion after a playoff victory over JJ Spaun last year, aims to join Scheffler as a back-to-back winner. However, a persistent back injury has hampered his preparations this time around. The past six champions hailed from the top 10 in the world rankings, raising questions about whether that streak endures.
Collin Morikawa’s Strong Momentum
Collin Morikawa enters atop the FedExCup standings after a solid season start, highlighted by a narrow victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and top-seven finishes in his subsequent events.
Golf analyst Paul McGinley noted, “He has shown lots of good form this year, and it’s a golf course that suits his skill set.” Nick Dougherty added, “I believe that Morikawa is going to win. His form, the make-up of his game and obviously coming here off the back of three really lovely results – including that win at Pebble Beach. He’s a brilliant iron player, which goes a long way here at TPC Sawgrass, and he’s pretty accurate from the tee as well, which is obviously imperative.”
Tommy Fleetwood Eyes Historic English Victory
No Englishman has captured The Players title yet, but FedExCup champion Tommy Fleetwood could change that with his rising form and pursuit of a second PGA Tour win. David Howell predicted, “His game is trending, and he’s going to wear a sensibly baggy pair of trousers for his trophy video on Sunday. You can see Tommy cruising a three-wood down that last hole with a little bit of draw to close it out – absolutely beautiful.”
Other Top Contenders
Nearly half of the world’s top 50 golfers compete this week, including Ludvig Åberg, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama, Cam Young, Patrick Cantlay, and Matt Fitzpatrick, all vying for the $4.5 million top prize.
Ewen Murray highlighted Cam Young: “The Wyndham Championship win was a big weight off Cam Young’s shoulders. After so many near misses, he’s ready for PGA Tour win number two and a step up in his career.” Rich Beem backed Cantlay: “I think Cantlay is overdue for a win, so why not here? The guy is disciplined enough to play this golf course very well, so I think he has a very good chance.”
