The alleged attack took place on a bus travelling through Strathfield, a suburb in Sydney’s inner-west. According to reports, the incident began after the 13-year-old girl, identified as Janna, reportedly intervened when she saw the man taking photos of another girl wearing a hijab without her consent. Following this, the man allegedly turned his attention to Janna, subjecting her to a torrent of racist and Islamophobic slurs. The video footage, which has been widely circulated, reportedly shows the man calling Janna a “f…ing terrorist” and an “immigrant dog,” among other deeply offensive terms.
Despite Janna informing the man that she was born in Australia and highlighting her young age, the alleged abuse continued. Passengers on the bus, along with Janna herself, reported the incident to the police after alighting at Strathfield Railway Station. The man reportedly disembarked the bus on Liverpool Road.

Following the report, police launched an investigation. On Tuesday, officers arrested a 50-year-old man at a residence in Greenacre, a suburb near Strathfield. Authorities have charged the man with stalking and intimidation, specifically with the intent to cause fear of physical harm. He was subsequently refused bail and is expected to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.

Jason Yat-sen Li, the State Labor MP for Strathfield, expressed his horror and anger over the alleged attack. He commended Janna for speaking up and stated, “In response, she was subjected to (an alleged) vile tirade of racist and Islamophobic abuse.” Li emphasized that Strathfield would not tolerate such behavior, particularly when it targets children. “Let me be absolutely clear: Strathfield will not tolerate racist or Islamophobic abuse, particularly when it targets children,” he declared.
Aftab Malik, the Islamophobia Envoy, commented on the broader trend of perpetrators targeting younger individuals, citing data from the Islamophobia Register Australia.
