A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) investigates the death of Adam Watts, a 55-year-old kennel owner in Angus, Scotland, killed by an abused bulldog-type dog under his care.
Watts suffered the fatal attack at his Juniper Kennels and Cattery in Kirkton of Auchterhouse in December 2021. The father of five, known for offering every dog a second chance, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inquiry Focus Areas
The FAI scrutinizes the circumstances surrounding Watts’ death, with emphasis on managing potentially dangerous dogs in temporary kennels. It also examines how Police Scotland shares information on dogs’ histories and behaviors with kennel operators.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8 June at Forfar Sheriff Court.
Background on the Incident
Jayne Dendle, Watts’ friend and colleague from Save Our Seized Dogs, explained that authorities seized the dog from its owner amid a court case and placed it at the kennel. She stated: “Adam never saw the wrong in the dog; he always thought each dog could be turned around. Tragically, that was the dog that couldn’t be turned around.”
Debbie Carroll from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) noted: “The death of Adam Watts occurred while in the course of his employment, making a fatal accident inquiry mandatory. Mr. Watts’ family will continue to receive updates on significant developments as proceedings advance.”
